January is National Soup Month

To many people, nothing is better than enjoying a hot bowl of soup on a chilly January day. It is probably the reason that the month was named National Soup Month. At Mi Jalisco, we pride ourselves on being one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants in Manchester. In addition, our crew is excited to celebrate the month by enjoying one of our three delicious soup bowls! We also wanted to throw in a bit of history behind each dish too.

Sopa de Chipotle

Sopa de Chipotle is a soup that gets its heat from both the temperature and the spice from the main ingredient. Chipotle is a smoke-dried, ripened jalapeño pepper mainly used for seasoning. In fact, the meaning of the word chipotle translates to “smoked pepper” in Spanish. The practice of smoking peppers dates back to the Mesoamericans as a way to preserve their food. The Aztecs adopted the method and introduced it to the Spaniards in the 1500s. Since then, it has been passed down for generations to how we see chipotle today. Keep in mind that this dish is not for the faint of heart. Chipotle measures in at 5,000 to 10,000 Scoville Units on the heat scale.

Sopa de Tortilla

Tortilla soup is another dish that is traditionally made in Mexico. Typically, you can see this dish made with fried corn tortilla chips in a broth. Additionally, the dish features tomato, garlic, onion, avocado, cheese cubes, and sour cream. Going back to the start of the dish, the tortilla chip was created by a woman named Rebecca Webb Carranza. In mid-1940, Carranza quite simply took a batch of misshapen tortillas and cut them into triangles. She put the triangles into a fryer and served them to her family during an event she was hosting.

Sopa de Pollo

Sopa de Pollo is a classic take on Chicken Noodle Soup. A version of the soup can be found in almost every culture worldwide. There is no set origin or original recipe for the dish as it is possible it popped up around the world during the same period.
